How can one character go on and on about being victimized. I can't stand reading about it especially when the reader knows that nothing happened. If anything, she is the aggressor. She traps him in a marriage and then whines about all the wrong he did to HER. I suppose there is comedy in the attacker taking in the victim role but I can't find it in this book. She is so self righteous about it that it is so I've had it. She is so self righteous about it that it is so off putting. One or two or three whines is fine but half of the book is entirely too much.
I suppose I'm at the point where things could change. They just struck a bargain for an heir. He will spend nights with her at her choosing and she will get paid for each night and month they spend together. There will be pages of sex, she will come to realize that she is still a virgin, she'll find out what happened between Taylen and his uncle, they fall in love, whatever. I just can't stomach reading more about how he did her wrong when it is entirely the other way around. I don't get why he even wants to pursue the marriage.
This guy is given little characterization and she is characterized as a victim and nothing else. It is as if nothing happened between the time she was at his party and the time he returned to England. That's two years and she is still hung up on a guy she barely knew. How can a character who is present in half of the book exhibit so little personality? What is with the broken doll treatment? You're telling me that this person who snuck in an infamous party is weak and meek? The story revolves around Lucinda and Taylen.
Lucinda attended his debauched party and she got drunk. They made out but nothing more. He took her home but got in an accident along the way. Her memories were bungled and she only remembers enough to believe that he took her virginity while she was intoxicated. Her brothers forced him in a marriage and he agreed since they were going to pay his father's debts. He gets sent away to America and he struck gold.

At the start of the story, Lucinda had been brought along by her friend to a house party, only to find herself being propositioned by a drunken earl. Her escape from his grasp led her into the bedroom of Taylen Ellesmere, the duke of Alderworth I wavered between 3 and 4 stars for this book, primarily because had the setting of the story been set a good years in current time rather than in the Regency time period, the story could not be any different other than perhaps the setup.
Her escape from his grasp led her into the bedroom of Taylen Ellesmere, the duke of Alderworth. Who happened to still be reading in bed, naked. Seduced, but not completely lost, Taylen bundled Lucinda home in his carriage, only for them to run into an accident on route home. It is at this point where the story was probably at its most interesting: Lucinda lost a good portion of her memory of that night, while Taylen was forced into marriage to Lucinda by her brothers, in the belief that her innocence had been lost. Three years of anger and disappointment of an unfulfilled marriage on both their parts was something that Sophia James had alluded to - something akin to Persuasion , which I had looked forward to.
But then, nothing. There was a whole lot of anger on Lucinda's part and Taylen being unjustly beaten up a lot, but then the seduction in the first few pages of the book completely disappeared. The story had a lot of potential, but it was a bit of a disappointment to see everything happen as clockwork: Lucinda's brothers being so wholly accepting of Taylen in the final few chapters even though they hated his guts for a good portion of the book; and Lucinda and Taylen falling in love so quickly without any seduction or chemistry. James writes great characters and good plots and then turns them into melodrama that reminds me of why I don't watch TV. What was it exactly that Tay's uncle did to him?
The Joys Of Binge Reading - Regency Romance - Sophia James
It was never fully explained. There were scars on his back from being whipped but something more sinister was hinted at. James writes about characters who have the worst luck. Everything that can go wrong, does go wrong.

Aug 04, Shelley rated it really liked it. I understood why Lucinda's brothers acted the way the did but they didn't get all the facts and Taylen suffered. To have gone through all that he had a such a young age would make it hard to trust or love another. My heart broke for him. Thank you for such a great read. LB A wonderful story with complex characters. I couldn't wait to finish the book and when I did I wanted to read it again. Aug 23, Jazzysmum rated it liked it.
I haven't read the first 3 books in the Wellingham series and obviously you do need to because the whole family is involved in this one and you need to work out who belongs to who. Lucinda Wellingham is the much younger sister of 3 brothers and has an ability to get herself into scrapes. One such scrape sees her married to the Duke of Alworth - Taylen highly improbable name for the 's Ellesmere, and her brothers are not pleased.

Sounds like a lovely wee story? It dragged for me; Lucinda and Taylen had an accident in a carriage after a small non sexual tryst at his home, both were injured and Lucinda lost her memory. She had flash backs and vermently insisted Taylen had taken her virtue. He was made to marry her, despite his protestations, by her 3 overbearing brothers. She wouldn't give this up despite being told many times until her memory returned near the end of the ebook when the couple reconcilled. Lucinda was selfrighteous over this to the point of sickening me.
She wanted Taylen but didn't like that she did so, purposely overereacting to any comments about children and family. She refused to listen to anyone especially her friend Posy who I suspect had a prety good idea of what didn't go on THE the night. Taylen wasn't perfect but flawed but he was honest. Lucinda was spoilt and dishonest. What annoyed me: The story was too modern for the times - men didn't wear wedding rings then.
